In one of Mel Brooks’ most well known movies the 1974 film, Blazing Saddles, racism is shown in a different manner than almost any other film. In this movie, racism is depicted as more of a comedy. Cleavon Little plays the role of the first black sheriff in a town scheduled to be demolished by a railroad that is in line for construction. Blazing Saddles is the perfect film to social commentary on racism because as Mel Brooks uses racism in a comedy goes to show how racism has more of a role of comedic relief in this film, not something to run one’s life by. Being as this movie is shown to be a comedy to most, if someone were to watch the film and evaluate it, they would realize that the extreme hatred between two races is actually social commentary on race. This movie is set to have taken place just after the Civil War. As soon as the movie begins, the audience is drawn into the subject of racism. As the black men work on the railroad, Taggart (Hedley Lamarrs sidekick), pulls up on the horse and says to the men watching all the slaves work; Taggart: â€Å"The surveyors say they may have run into some quicksand up ahead. Better check it out. † Lyle: â€Å"Okay, Ill send down a team of horses to check out the ground. † Taggart: â€Å"*Horses*? † [hits Lyles head] Taggart: â€Å"We cant afford to lose any horses, you dummy! Send over a couple of niggers† (Blazing Saddles). After Lyle, a white man watching the slaves picks two black men from the crowd to take the hand cart to see where the quick sand starts. It is obvious that Taggart and the other white men surveying the slaves have more respect for the horses than they have for the black men working for them. Once the slaves make it to the quick sand they get stuck in it, along with the handcart. Taggart and Lyle take no time to get the handcart out of the quicksand, but completely disregard the slaves crawling their way out of the. To me, this is one of the most important parts of the film because of the fact that it reveals the way that the attorney general and his men behave toward the different colored people. This scene is also the audiences’ first glimpse of racism in the film. As the film progresses, one can see how it develops into a social commentary as it conveys racism more brutally from one scene to the next. As soon as Hedley Lamarr realizes that he has to make the railroad go straight through the town of Rock Ridge, he (Hedley) comes up with a brilliant idea to place a black man as the town sheriff. Usually in any other motion picture that involves racism, a black man becoming the sheriff of a town would be quite the honor but this black man, (Bart) knows that it is a suicide mission to try and get the people of Rock Ridge to flee the town. Hedley convinces Governor Lepetomane that he would be considered a great man if he were the one to implement the first black sheriff in town. As the scene continues on in the Governor’s office, Hedley and the Governor show no respect to Bart (soon to be sheriff). Bart sits to the side while Hedley and the drunken Governor discuss their plans to get him to be sheriff. As Bart and the attorney general are walking out the door, the governor mentions that he needs to organize Bart’s funeral jokingly. Bart has a very uncertain look on his face. The way Mel Brooks keeps the camera pointed straight at Bart, while the Governor is chuckling about his comment on Bart’s funeral, displays his true feeling towards the white men in the room as well as the stress between these two races portrayed to the audience. As the audience sees this movie as a comedy, social commentary is exemplified because of the hatred displayed between the two races, even if it is shown in a humorous manner. The next scene begins with Bart being very excited to ride into his town of Rock Ridge and everyone in the town is just as excited to meet the new sheriff. As the people of Rock Ridge see Bart approaching the town, they start to get loud for him and the band starts playing in excitement for the new sheriff. As Bart comes forward, the crowd becomes completely silent and the band stops playing. Howard Johnson: [reading] â€Å"As honorary chairman of the welcoming committee, its my privilege to present a laurel and hearty handshake to our new † [looks up and sees Bart] Howard Johnson:† nigger (Blazing Saddles). The camera stayed pointed at Bart while no one spoke. One can definitely tell by the look on Bart’s face, that he is trying not to look frightened and stay calm and collected. As soon as he took the podium, everyone in town pulled their loaded guns out and pointed them straight at Bart. He had a very uneasy look on his face as the camera captured every gun pointed at him in the picture. Everyone showed their extreme hatred toward another race. Bart soon made a quick decision and to turn the gun on himself. The crowd obviously has no idea what goes through another races’ head because he makes every white person look incredibly stupid when acting like he will pull the trigger on himself. This made everyone put their guns down and allowed him to make it to the police station safely as he calls himself so talented while all the white towns people extremely dumb for buying his absurd act. Another form of social commentary in this film is the demonstration of a rare friendship between races. During Bart’s first day of being the sheriff of Rock Ridge comes into play, he meets someone that he can finally talk to and call his friend. This is a man named Jim. Jim awakens from his drunken night sleep in the jail to find wakes a black town sheriff. He is extremely confused to say the least. The two men show the audience something they have yet to see in this movie. This is an actual friendship between a black man and a white man. The camera goes back and forth between the men’s faces showing no hatred or any violence toward one another. As they start to talk more and get to know one another over a game of chess, Bart discovers that he is the â€Å"Maco Kid,† the man with the fastest hands in the world. Jim soon becomes Bart’s right hand man. Overcoming racial boundaries is a recurring theme of social commentary in many movies that focus on racism. As Bart goes out on the town for his first day of work, he tries to be very nice and calm, but as soon as he says: Bart: â€Å"Mornin, maam. And isnt it a lovely mornin? † Elderly Woman: â€Å"Up yours, nigger† (Blazing Saddles). The sheriff is actually torn apart by this and returns to the station. Jim basically asks him if he expected everyone to act nice toward him. Hedley then sends in Mongole to take out the sheriff. Bart soon receives notice that Mongole is terrorizing the town. As Bart, being the clever man that he is, he tricks Mongole into taking a candy graham that is actually dynamite. Bart takes down the mighty Mongole and Taggart is shocked. Bart still under the impression that people do not appreciate his work is surprised when the elderly woman that told him off earlier, brings by a pie for him for putting Mongole away. The people of Rock Ridge are becoming more accepting of their new black sheriff. In rebuttal, some may say that Blazing Saddles is nothing but a dumb comedy and there is no other director that could actually get away with making a movie like this, other than Mel Brooks. Which is actually very good observation. At the time of this movie’s release, happened to be one of the first times that racism had taken a comedic approach. This was able to take place because of Mel Brooks’ ridiculous comedy. From the scene in which the old, dirty cowboys are sitting around a camp fire, eating beans, and letting farts rip like crazy, to another ridiculous scene of Bart tricking everyone in town that he was going to pull the trigger on himself after everyone had their gun pointed at him. The way Mel Brooks portrays racism as a hilarious comedy, made it seem to the audience that racism is such a ridiculous topic to get all bent out of shape about. When something as serious as racism, is put into a movie like this to show audiences just how dumb all the controversy is. Mel Brooks just so happened to be the one to put it out there for all to see. Mel Brooks’ film, Blazing Saddles, is a very suitable social commentary about racism. The way the camera shows most of the black actors’ reactions after racial slurs were said, the hatred between two races, intense racism, rare friendship, and overcoming racial boundaries is all shown in detail in this film. As I stated previously, some people say that this film is just a stupid comedy but if you actually watch the film and the people in it, it is solely about racism. I believe that if people were to watch this movie they could come to realize see their own actions toward people of other races and maybe, just maybe this hilarious movie could have an impact on how people in the world today interact toward others.

Be especially careful with such expressions as â€Å"according to so-and-so,† â€Å"in my opinion,† â€Å"one suspects,† etc. Less frequently, but more embarrassingly, whom is sometimes substituted for who when little or nothing stands between it and its verb, as in this sentence taken from a news account: â€Å"An off-duty fireman whom lives in the area provided immediate assistance.† Mistake 2: Unnecessary would in a wish about the past INCORRECT: Ten Things I Wish I Would Have Known When I Was Twenty CORRECT : Ten Things I Wish I Had Known When I Was Twenty The opportunity for knowing the ten things existed in the past, but exists no longer. The tense required, therefore, is the past perfect (had + past participle). Mistake 3: Dangling modifier INCORRECT: At the age of four, Sam’s family moved from Florida, Missouri, to Hannibal. CORRECT : At the age of four, Sam moved with his family from Florida, Missouri, to Hannibal. Modifiers should be positioned as closely as possible to the element they modify. The modifying phrase â€Å"At the age of four† modifies â€Å"Sam,† not â€Å"Sam’s family.† Mistake 4: Subject-Verb disagreement with delayed subject INCORRECT: There goes Sally and Greg on their way to the movies. CORRECT : There go Sally and Greg on their way to the movies. Subjects and verbs must agree in number. When a sentence begins with here or there, the true subject of the sentence follows the verb. â€Å"Sally and Greg† is a plural subject, so the verb go must also be plural: â€Å"Sally and Greg go.† Mistake 5: Incorrect use of object pronouns INCORRECT: Me and my brothers all have college degrees in business. CORRECT : My brothers and I all have college degrees in business. Several English pronouns retain different forms that indicate their function in a sentence. Me is an object form. In the example, it is incorrectly used as the subject of the verb have. Other object forms often used incorrectly are him, her, us, them, and whom. Mistake 6: Incorrect use of subject pronouns INCORRECT: The owner was most kind to my wife and I as we toured the grounds. CORRECT : The owner was most kind to my wife and me as we toured the grounds. I is a subject pronoun form. It is correctly used as the subject of a verb. Its object form is me, which is used as the object of a verb or, as in this example, the object of a preposition (to). Not all English pronouns retain an object form. The pronouns that do have subject and object forms are he/him, she/her, we/us, they/them, and who/whom. Mistake 7: Inappropriate use of reflexive pronoun forms INCORRECT: Jack and myself built the company from scratch. CORRECT : Jack and I built the company from scratch. A pronoun that ends in -self or -selves is called a reflexive pronoun. This type of pronoun refers to a noun or personal pronoun that occurs elsewhere in the sentence. For example, â€Å"He cut himself shaving.† In this example, himself refers to the same person as the one meant by He. A typical error is to use a reflexive pronoun in place of a personal pronoun: INCORRECT: Thank you for everything you did for myself and my family. CORRECT : Thank you for everything you did for me and my family. Note: A more polite usage is to put me last in the phrase: Thank you for everything you did for my family and me. Mistake 8: Incorrect use of did instead of had in certain â€Å"if clauses† One use of the conjunction if is to introduce a clause that states an action that would have changed an outcome. For example, â€Å"If I hadn’t missed the train, I would be in London now.† A common error is to use did instead of had, as in this headline: INCORRECT: [Celebrity] thinks he would be dead now if he didn’t give up alcohol and drugs CORRECT : [Celebrity] thinks he would be dead now if he hadn’t given up alcohol and drugs The person mentioned in the headline actually said (correctly), â€Å"I honestly don’t think I’d be alive if I hadn’t stopped drinking.† The tense required is the past perfect (had + past participle). Mistake 9: Incorrect irregular verb forms Most English verbs form the past and past participle by adding -ed to the base form. The combination of the wheel and axle made possible early forms of transportation, which became more sophisticated over time with the development of other technologies. Later, the pegs were replaced with holes carved into the cart frame, and the axle was placed through the holes. This made it necessary for the larger wheels and thinner axle to be separate pieces. The wheels were attached to both sides of the axle. Finally, the fixed axle was invented, wherein the axle did not turn but was solidly connected to the cart frame. The wheels were fitted onto the axle in a way that allowed them to freely rotate. Fixed axles made for stable carts that could turn corners better. By this time the wheel can be considered a complete invention. Following the invention of the wheel, the Sumerians invented the sledge, a device consisting of a flat base mounted on a pair of runners with curved ends. The sledge was useful for transporting cargo over smooth terrain; however, the Sumerians quickly realized that the device would be more efficient once it was mounted on rollers. Considering this situation, had there been great efforts to construct schools or improve those which already existed, more children could have been molded in a better environment. In effect, there would be no need to construct more jails if there was a better plan for the people that encourage them and show that there is a hope for a better tomorrow for the poor. The law is said to force more prisoners to stay in jai l for a minimum of twenty five years to life even for petty offenses. The long period of punishment for offenders increases the number of prisoners at a faster rate and thus requires the government to build more prisons. Other factors that affected the situation in the ghetto were the Watts riots which caused most white residents to flee the area. Then there was the fair housing legislation which allowed middle-class Blacks to move to better environments leaving the unemployed, single mothers, elderly and the welfare cases behind. Such groups of hopeless and helpless people were joined by Latinos who fled their country due to worse political situations. The competition for a low paying job among Blacks and Mexicans is high and is making their lives more difficult. With the struggles that they are going through, the people often result to violence to express their cry for their rights however such actions make the situation even worse. Following out Corwin’s logic, the conditi on of schools should first and foremost be made a top priority for the government because this can be an instrument in the making of better citizens. The improvement of such institutions should be well-funded so that quality service will be given to the people. Teachers should be paid well so that they will stay in the ghetto even after years of experience. Introduction Morals, as defined by psychologist, are the attitudes and beliefs held by individuals that aid in the determination or what is right and what is wrong (Hock 142). It is believed that what is deemed moral is determined by our culture and the norms present in that culture. It is also believed that we are not born with an established set of morals; instead, we must gain this outline of what is moral throughout our childhood and adolescence and into adulthood. In order to properly analyze the extent Bandura social learning theory plays in the attainment of level three, stage six, of Kohlberg’s moral development theory the theories of Kohlberg and Bandura must be properly outlined. The application of these theories will then by applied to case of Martin Luther King, Jr. who observed, through texts, the non-violent protest methods of Mohandas Gandhi. Lawrence Kohlberg, focusing his research on Jean Piaget, gained in interest in child development. While at the University of Chicago, Kohlberg expounded upon the ideas set forth by Piaget and posed the question â€Å"how does the amoral infant become capable of moral reasoning† (Hock 143)? As a result of his research, Kohlberg created his moral development stage theory. His theory consists of three stages and each stage has two respective levels. In the first level, known as either pre-conventional morality or pre-moral, a person shows only self interest. In the first stage of this level a person will act morally simply because they are motivated by rewards or punishments. In stage two, the best interest of the person is the motivation for moral behavior. True in a way, but the main cause in the United States for obesity is bad eating habits. Almost every citizen doesn’t know that extra eating, and extra late night snacking is a bad eating habit, which causes problems in the future. They practically thinks its normal the way they eat, but long term wise its causes bad health problems from bad eating habits. Bad eating habits can be unhealthy which can be treated by changing your diet and controlling how much you consume. Breaking bad habits is hard to do, using me for example, for years I had bad eating habits it was hard to control does late night cravens, but me as a person had to change for my health and for my children sake. A good starting point is to get very clear on what is considered to be benefiting you making the changes. It’s good to consult with your food doctor to see what they could prescribe you to do to stop your bad eating habits. I know from experience that dieting foods may not have a good taste, but fruits are good supplement to help you start eating healthy foods instead of junk food . This could be your first step on concurring your bad eating habits. Over time, habits become automatic, learned behaviors, and these are stronger than new habits you are trying to incorporate into your life. There are millions of ways for you to stop your bad eating habits; you as a person just have to accept the challenge to change bad eating habits. In August 1945, U.S. President Harry S. Truman, Joseph Stalin, and Britains Prime Minister Clement Attlee worked to shift Polands borders. On August 16, 1945, the Soviet Union and Poland signed a treaty which shifted Polands borders west. In total Poland lost 69,860 square miles (180,934 square kilometers) in the east and in the west it gained 38,986 square miles (100,973 square kilometers). Until 1989, Poland maintained a close relationship with the Soviet Union. Throughout the 1980s, Poland also experienced a large amount of civil unrest and strikes by industrial workers.
